MRI-compatible wheelchairs and crutches are made of special materials that have no or minimal magnetism. These materials ensure that the wheelchairs can be used safely and effectively in MRI environments without the risk of magnetic attraction or interference. Nevertheless, there are some important safety aspects to consider:
- Material composition: Even though MRI-compatible wheelchairs and crutches are made of anti-magnetic materials, it is important to ensure that there are no metallic parts that have been overseen. - Pre-use check: Before each MRI examination, the wheelchairs and crutches should be thoroughly checked to ensure that they do not contain any magnetic parts or have been accidentally exchanged with normal magnetic wheelchairs or crutches. This can be done by special detectors or manual inspection.
- Patient safety: Patients should be informed of the fact that wheelchairs or crutches they have brought with them are usually unsuitable for the MRI room. These should always be replaced on location with MRI-compatible alternatives.
- Storage: MRI-compatible objects should be stored in a special area away from the magnetic objects to prevent confusion.
- Emergency protocols: Clear emergency protocols should be in place in case a metallic object enters the MRI room. Staff should be trained on how to react quickly and safely in such situations.
The main risk when using MRI-compatible wheelchairs and crutches is therefore the possibility that metallic parts are overlooked and the wheelchair or crutch reacts with the magnetic field, resulting in accidents. However, these risks can be minimised through careful inspection, staff training and clear emergency protocols.
