Oxygen cylinders for MRI

MRI scanners generate a very strong magnetic field that can attract metal objects. Normal oxygen cylinders made of ferromagnetic metals could therefore become dangerous projectiles and seriously or deadly injure patients or staff and damage the MRI scanner. The use of anti-magnetic oxygen cylinders is therefore essential to ensure the safety of patients and staff. The Picture on the left demonstrates once again the attractive force of the magnetic field. Using conventional oxygen cylinders can therefore quickly lead to dangerous situations.

But there is not only the danger that the oxygen cylinder will become a projectile, there is also the danger that the metallic components will cause interference. This means that the image quality of the scan is affected, which can lead to incorrect diagnoses.

The anti-magnetic cylinders are made of aluminium and the valves of brass, because these materials are not affected by the magnetic field. Nevertheless, accidents can be caused by incorrectly labelled or unchecked equipment. It is therefore important that all equipment and aids in the MRI room are regularly checked for magnetic resonance safety.

In particular, the oxygen cylinders brought in by patients must be checked for their MRI suitability before entering the MRI room and replaced with in-house oxygen cylinders if necessary.
