- How it works: MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of the body. This excites the hydrogen atoms in the body, resulting in measurable signals that are turned into images.
- Areas of application: MRI is commonly used to examine the brain, spine, joints and internal organs such as the heart and liver. It is particularly useful for diagnosing tumours, strokes, herniated discs and other conditions.
- Advantages: Unlike X-ray or CT scans, MRI does not use ionising radiation, making it a gentler option. It also provides very detailed images of soft tissue.
- Disadvantages: The scan takes place in a narrow tube, which can cause problems for people with claustrophobia. The device also produces loud knocking noises, which are uncomfortable for many patients, so earplugs or headphones must be used.
- Procedure: During the scan, the patient lies in a tube-shaped scanner. The scan usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes. Patients must lie still during the scan in order to receive clear images.
